Ms. Lisa showed us a video clip from a high school biology class in the US. They have a massive lab! Our Exploratorium is pretty cool too and we can't wait to spend time experimenting in our science labs. In this video, the teacher talked about "perfect flowers". Did you know that not all flowers are "perfect" It got us thinking about plants and flowers in general. Here are the results of our inquiry into the natural sciences.
1.Rings in trees happen because of the change in growth speed through winter, spring, summer and fall,so one ring usually marks the passage of one year in the life of the tree.
2. For the same reason a person may be born with blue or green eyes, brown or red hair, certain flowers have certain colors and smells. The color making process is based on the flower's pigments, which are decided upon in the hereditary genome of the plant.
3. Not all plants and flowers are edible because some have poisons.
Are you curious about perfect flowers? Check out the video below and happy World Science Day!
As Y4Red kicks off a Science-focus week of inquiry and exploration (in acknowledgement of World Science Day), we wanted to give you a little Q&A about old inventions that we still use today. And two jokes!
Q: Why did Thomas Edison invent the light bulb?
A: So he could see in the dark. (ha ha ...but it is true too!)
Q: Who invented the plane?
A: the Right Brothers - oh, no that's wrong...the Wright Brothers! (ha ha)
Q: Who invented the first camera?
A: Johann Zahn
Q: Who upgraded the phone to modern times?
A: Steve Jobs
Q: Who discovered electricity?
A: Ben Franklin
Science day is coming up ! Our Y4 Classes are excited . We have Open Day too, so the family members or parents can come to watch too! The Y4 Classes dress up as an invention that they think changed their lives or impacted the world. We did a survey to the whole class. The results of it are:
Light bulb 8
And what about you? What are you wearing on Science Day? Please take our survey below.
Invention Convention Survey
And for non-UISG students, we want to know in the comments below, what you think about our Invention Convention post. Are you having one as well at your school? Tell us about it. Thanks,
Pariyat, Selina, Maxim, Emad
Would you like to hear a scary story? We hear many while sitting around our camp fire. Some of us were a little scared, but most of us were having too much fun. We roasted marshmallows, made smores and had an an awesome time. We also kept journals of our experience away from home. For some of us, it was the first time. Stay tuned to read a few of the stories we wrote and reflections from our journals. Oh, and have a Happy Halloween!
Welcome to the Y4 Student Blog! Our launch post was planned to coincide with our upcoming camp, but we were so busy preparing, packing and just being excited, that well, we didn't make our deadline. Ooops!
We went to Hwang Fang Nine Dragon Lake! We needed to take the bus about two hours to nine Dragon lake! We had a nice BBQ and a big campfire, we stayed in a hotel for one night and in a tent for one night, We had many activities planned, tons to and of course we got to play! We went on long hikes, and made our own catapults, bow and arrows!
We learned a lot about ourselves and each other. Stay tuned for more great posts about our learning and experiences.
